Chelsea apologise to Ferdinand family over Terry saga

Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has apologised to the Ferdinand family for the ordeal that have been put through during the John Terry racial abuse saga. Buck had earlier confirmed that Terry would remain Chelsea captain, but he recognised the strain the ordeal had put on the Ferdinand family, telling Talksport "I saw the effect it [the trial] had on them, and it wasn't good."

The apology comes after a year of increasing animosity between the Ferdinand family and John Terry. In period following Terry's racial abuse of Anton Ferdinand relations  soured between Terry and Anton's brother, Rio.

On the first day of John Terry's trial over the incident, the Manchester United defender tweeted about the movie "Liar Liar" in what was widely seen as a veiled shot at his former England defensive partner.

More recently, Anton Ferdinand refused to shake Terry's hand prior to the QPR/Chelsea match in September of this year.

The Chelsea chairman will hope that the club's apology, coupled with Terry's statement of remorse in the aftermath of the Football Association's decision to fine him £220,000 and ban him for four games, will draw a line under the incident that, by Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay's own admission, has undermined the success Chelsea have enjoyed over the past year.
